Front End Development

Looking for a UX Lead, Product Designer, or Product Manager?  Let’s talk︎

A colleague recently shared this lovely recommendation for me on LinkedIn, and articulated my strengths more succinctly than I’ll ever be able to:

“Ethan has shown remarkable adeptness in his role as Director of AskNature. In our several years as colleagues, I've been continually impressed by his ability to elevate what AskNature can and should be while at the same time managing a huge amount of input with often times conflicting or competing implications. In working with him directly on a recent project, I was able to experience his style of leadership first hand, which includes a wonderful combination of welcoming and respecting of new ideas without losing track of the big picture. I was extremely impressed by his wide ranging abilities from strategic planning, to design thinking and business model development, all the way to coding and UX/UI skills. I can wholeheartedly recommend Ethan as a dynamic, multi-talented leader with fantastic teamwork skills.”

I'm a PNW-based computational designer with foundations in human centered design and front end web development. For over fifteen years I have led and contributed to teams creating a wide variety of web applications, artifacts, marketing and branding collateral, communications pieces, films, proposals, expeditions, events, and organizational strategies. In various professional engagements I’ve taken on the roles of web designer, full stack developer, user experience designer, industrial designer, user researcher, photographer, videographer, workshop facilitator, product manager, product owner, program director, and creative director, to name a few.

No matter what the medium or goals, I believe good design and delivery come down to having a clear understanding of the people and systems I'm serving, an intimate relationship with languages, tools, and raw materials I'm working with, and a fun and productive relationship with the people I'm creating with. Learn. Build. Measure. Repeat.

I bring deep curiosity, visual thinking, and a systems perspective to everything I do, learn daily from life's biodiverse and circular systems, and believe that good business means driving positive impact for users and stakeholders while closing loops and crafting solutions that support the local and global systems we depend on.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with brilliant teams to create value for:
P&G, Ford, National Geographic, Nau, Intel, CIT, PTC, Biomimicry Institute, Indochine Development Group, XPLANE, International League of Conservation Photographers, Lockheed Martin, Mondetta, Briggs & Riley, Petunia Picklebottom, G99, Forge Portland, Rocker Ski Rack, Southwings, Reel Water Productions, Sugarluxe, Tabar, Outdoor Research, Mountain Hardwear, Eddie Bauer First Ascent, Bonfire, Black Dot, HMK, Keen, Save Our Wild Salmon, Pongo Media Productions, Under Solen, IBM, Sunset Mortgage, King Pacific Lodge, Biomimicry 3.8, Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe, and many more ...
